𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙖𝙢𝙚 𝙖𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙢 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙪𝙢𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙨 ?

And wondered what that means or its relevance to your perfume purchase?

Let’s dive in!

First;

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙨?

Fragrance Notes are scent descriptors that can be sensed upon the application of a perfume.

They are separated into three classes: 𝙩𝙤𝙥/𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙨, 𝙢𝙞𝙙𝙙𝙡𝙚/𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙨; which denote groups of scents which can be sensed with respect to the time after the application of a perfume.

Together, the top, heart and base notes work together to create a beautiful fragrance

𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙪𝙢𝙚/𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠

Fragrance notes are essentially the different scent layers that make up the final fragrance and serve as building blocks that contribute to the overall scent profile of a perfume.

Each note plays a specific role in the fragrance’s development and longevity and often represented in what we call a fragrance triangle

By the side of the triangle, there is a timeline where each ingredient sits based upon the length of time it lasts.

These notes are created with knowledge of the evaporation process and intended use of the perfume.

When a fragrance is sprayed, the odor is dependent on the materials of the composition at the top and almost always the universally loved citrus 🍊 notes

They have a different feel to the aromatic/ herbs 🌿 found in the “Head”

Likewise the oils which make up heart/ midnotes as well as the base all have marked olfactory( smell) finger prints that separate them into different categories. 🪵 👞 💼

Bear in mind; The presence of one note may alter the perception of another which is usually why we advise perfumes shouldn’t be chosen based off a listed notes ONLY!

For instance, the presence of certain base or heart notes will alter the scent perceived when the top notes are strongest

And likewise the scent of base notes in the dry-down will often be altered depending on the smells of the heart notes.
