Niche/ Indie What’s the distinction between this two

I have done a post on this in the past but I thought the need to re address it again.

As the niche categories of the perfume industry continues to experience a spike in popularity. Partly fueled by the demand of consumers for exclusivity. It is important to understand this industry buzzword and to also know some of other category of perfumes as Defined by leading fragrance organizations.

Niche perfumes are fragrances created by companies that are solely into perfume making and as such lends hand for highly skilled and improved craftsmanship since that’s primarily what they are dedicated to.

Early niche perfume brands such as serge lutens, L’artisan perfumer were sold through select channel (such as specialty boutiques rather than departmental stores) and created in much smaller quantities which accounts for its then scarcity.

These days the term niche is used to describe everything made that isn’t by designer brands. However, the line of distinction between mainstream designer and niche fragrances continues to blur as most niche brands have been acquired by much bigger parent cooperation making them more widely available and ubiquitous as their designer counterparts.

Marked by high price point beyond many’s purchasing power, another category that rears it heard which also offers some exclusivity but at a more affordable rate and worth noting is the Indie category which accounts for smaller niche brands That are independently owned.

While niche perfumes can be created by skilled perfumers who may not necessarily be part of the company, but with creative direction from owners, Indie perfumes are usually made by the primary owners from the manufacturing to bottling. They are also characterized by much fewer distribution Chanel ( sold through their houses or own websites) and even fewer production scale.

Whether differentiated by a distinction of ownership; being privately owned by a single entity (person, family) as opposed to a large parent company. Or defined by primary dedication (niche as a brand that just does perfume), or distinction made between the two based on price.

Terminologies are just there for definition, it’s not as important to the consumer. People buy what appealed to them so indies, or niches ? It’s all about producing best quality, unique and interesting products regardless of labels.

Till I come your way again with another scented feature!

Love and great scents always 😊
